1st off this is my 1st bike in 16 years, bought this last week with 9k miles on it, ran great all the way home except the clutch cable was a little too tight, problem solved....
next issue, fired it up this morn.......taking forever on choke, tried to take off and had to run a slight amount of choke and then shut it off, then the probs start, bike wouldnt idle and felt like it was only running on 3 cylinders, and it would kick back and forth from 3-4 cylinders, i said screw it and drove it back home and now its sitting.....has a fresh tank of gas in it, carbs where allready serviced ect....any help on what maybe the issue fouled plug or spark controller any help would be great so i can get back out on it...![]()
EDIT: nevermind, the kind of bike is in the title... i'm an idiot haha
Get over to the intro section and introduce yourself too![]()

Check all electrical.
Could be an old battery, that was just charged up to sell the bike and has really failed.
Next would be bigger ticket items like stator, rectifier, or field coils.

I have a 1984 Ninja 900 and it shares some common issues.
It is possible that the vacuum operated fuel tap is acting up.
Try starting it with the fuel tap in the "prime" setting.
If the bike runs better it's possible that the fuel tap needs to be rebuilt.
The kit costs about $15-22 at Z1 Enterprises.com.
Mine acts up every two years like clockwork.
Read this,

Welcome to the forum.
Is there any chance you where riding this thing up and down a street in north hampton? There was a dude out side my office having an issue on a ninja 600 today. Left before I could help. Thing sounded horrible.
I have a parts bike for you on the cheap if ya want.
there are somany issues that that sounds like
vacuum line
gunk in one of the carbs
bad ground
short in a wire
bad plug wire
bad fuel flow (filter or tap)
anyway ya look at it .... be methodical and start with one system finish that system and then move to the next. do both functional and visual inspections of wiring and vacuum hoses.
it ran fine for a while right?? then what about one day to the next could have changed?
check the carbs if they are running low on fuel (lean) then you'll do no good for that old beauty's internals
Keep us posted

Well the bike sat for a few hours and went out and tried it again.....fired right up, ran on choke till it was warmed up, adjusted the idel after it warmed up, so now the idle is working where as yesterday morning it wouldnt idle at all, rode it for about 20 miles everything seemed to be better except as the article on the fuel tap described as engine fade between 60-80 it had hesatation it seems tho it would come and go it wasnt constant,
the only thing that had changed since i had picked the bike up was i put fuel in it....
day 1 bought bike rode it home about 40 miles, parked
bike.....day 2 issues began but before fueling it, the more i think of it....it was starving for fuel......possibly the fuel tap.
OK, new battery good.
You say the carbs have been serviced so
Your post comments are leading me to the carbs or maybe the intake boots.
Since it is a 86 check the rubber intake boots between the carbs and cylinder head.
Are there large noticable cracks in them ?
If so they will need to be replaced because they are letting air in .

TYPICALLY, the difference between "prime" and "on" is this:
"on" turns the fuel on when vacuum pressure is present (when the engine is turning).
"prime" turns the fuel on no matter what. It's used to fill empty carbs with fuel prior to starting.
So basically it's no big deal to run with it on prime, just remember to turn the fuel off when you shut the bike off.

it def feels like its starving........could be the air intake boots....fuel tap....carbs time to leave it to the pros....
From what you have mentioned over a few posts leads me to believe it is the fuel tap acting up.
Set the tap to primes as mentioned and go for a ride. If the issue clears up then you need to purchase a rebuild kit for the fuel tap.
It could be something else as well but as I said it sure sounds like the issue my bike has had over the years typically solved by the kit.
Glad to hear progress has been made.
Enjoy the bike.
Cool.
A similar thing happened on my Kawi 500... there was a "mod" you can do where you remove the vacuum diaphragm and rig it so that it was no longer vacuum actuated.
But this was on a race bike... street bikes ya might as well keep it stock.

I had a '89 600R and it fired spontaneously on 3 cylinders, but it turned out the stator cover was pinching a wire. That's what I would've suggested, but it looks like you found your problem.
Congrats, and ride safe![]()
Glad you solved your current problem. Need any parts? I've got a red seat, a black seat, a red seat cowl, and both side panels that sorta go under the seat area(same paint shceme as your avatar).
Also, an issue I've had with both my 88 the previous 85, if the bike gets wet, water actually pools up in the spark plug valley on top of the head, until it dries, the bike will misfire. If you park it outside, cover it, if you ride it in the rain, make sure it has a front fender on it(don't ask...).
