Wonder if this was designed to steal Triumph's thunder?
Yamaha announced the availability of the 2011 Super Tenere' in the US.
Yamaha made some 2011 model announcements for the U.S. Market this morning. A number of our readers have expessed an interest in the Super Tenere adventure bike previously available in the European market, only. Well, Yamaha is bringing the bike to the U.S. for the 2011 model year through a “Priority Delivery Program” at Yamaha dealerships beginning in September. To get one, you will have to place a $500 deposit with your dealer, and expect delivery of the bike beginning in May of 2011. The starting U.S. MSRP will be $13,900, and the bike will be available in blue (as pictured above).
The Super Tenere was tested by MD here, and left a quite favorable impression. It offers huge gas tank capacity and capable handling, both on-road and off. Yamaha has stressed mass centralization, and the handling prowess of the Super Tenere, and early returns indicate they hit the mark.
If that sounds like a lot, keep in mind the BMW 1200GS is $14,950 before options.
The Suzuki V-Strom product team will undoubtedly respond to the challenge by offering one new paint color....

I am really enjoying the surge in the "Adventure" bike segment, and I can see myself replacing my DR650 with one of these monsters, soon. But when are the manufacturers going to realize that "low" pipes on dirt bikes went out in the early '70's? All of these bikes need good, solid, wrap-around skid plates, and pipes that go up, not down.
I sold my Triumph Adventurer earlier this year, and I really love their triples. I would have to predict that the Triumph motor is going to stomp all of the "Adventure" twins.
It's official: The new bike will be called the Tiger 800 (road version) and the Tiger 800 XC (offroad).
Check it:

Damn, that yamaha is ugly. And not cool-ugly like most adventure bikes. Cartoonish-ugly.
I like the looks of the new tigers, from what I can see. I think this will be a good move for Triumph.
And meantime, spy shots have started turning up of Triumph's 1200cc Tiger:
It's early yet; bike's not due for release till 2012, so this probably isn't a very good indication of what it will actually look like.

Powdercoat that frame matte black and it'll look alright. I hope that's an option on the XC. I really want to see the front of the off-road version with the high fender though...

I don't really care what the frame looks like. I'm more interested in how well the XC version works off pavement.

See second sentence of my last post. It's either something like this, or an 800gs next.

I'm a little disappointed to see a Battlewing on the front wheel. They should be showing these with TKC-80s or Karoos.

Those arrows look like they might hide that subframe nicely...

Crikey, she's a looker all right! Some aluminum panniers will do the trick of covering up the subframe very nicely.

So Mark
is it going to be your next mount??
Are you thinking of it for Alaska
eat me
Still waiting to see the actual specs -- my mind could still be changed if Triumph did something silly like giving the bike a 4-gallon gas tank or making it weigh 500lbs or pricing it in F800GS territory. But so far I like what I've seen.
And yeah, I'm definitely thinking of it for Alaska.

I'll be very interested in this in a few years. Gotta pay off the truck before I can think of it but I've wanted a Tiger for a long time, still trying to convince Mick to give me his, since he has too many bikes![]()
