So a few weeks ago I picked up an 87 Yamaha SRX250 as a winter project from Doug (Sheppo). Thanks man! The srx is not a common bike which is why you might not have heard of it. 87 was the debut of the srx250 in the us as well as the ex250. The ninja made more hp than the srx mostly because the srx was air cooled and the ex was water. Either way the srx was only imported 1 year because of the success of the ninja.
My plan is to get it completely stripped and do new painting and refresh.
Here's a before.
Here's where I'm at after last night. I'm going to go with the same scheme as the R1. The 50th anniversary colors. Frame is going to be black, tank yellow, body yellow, rims and rearsets and tripleclamps black, etc.

I have always loved there bikes.... cool little bike. Is the paint that bad that you need to paint it?
Do eeit.
I find some irony in the fact that you have a project with a red frame that you are gonna paint black and I have a project with a black frame that I am gonna paint red.
It's not bad but the tank has a dent. And more than anything I just want it yellow.
Haha the red frame isn't bad but I gotta go wiz khalifa on this one.
Got it down to the frame this am. Digging into the motor and tranny next. Needs gaskets and the clutch is frozen. Going to repaint or pc the engine cases while it's all apart.

So jelly
Cool. A friend scored one last year to go along with his VTR250 (interceptor).

That thing is dying for an rz motor
Pete
I wish I could afford it!
There was no oil in the engine when stripping the bike so I opted to totally disassemble the motor to check for wear. There was a good amount of water in there so I'm glad I did. Cylinder walls and piston seem decent so ill reuse those. Head also looks good. Looks as if it had oil in it when it ran last. Need a flywhel puller to continue and to borrow my cousins impact to get the clutch basket off. Here she sits.

Can someone explain the carbs? It seems like it's got one flat side and one vacuum type ???
One is mechanical and the other is a cv slide. Cv supplies the main power and mechanical starts to work in the higher rpms. I looked for a replacement so I could have 2 mechanical carbs but I haven't found anything that would fit easily. Intake boots are known to go on these too. Check for cracks. They are expensive to replace but you can still get them from Yamaha. And the mechanical carb piggybacks on the cv carbs float bowl. It doesn't have one of its own.

Interesting set up. I'm going to look at that one tomorrow. We'll see.

I can get a jet kit for that beast from Japan, $180... dual FCRs will run $850.
Edit: Ninja 250 carbs are supposed to use the same intake diameter and spacing...

Ok then the SRX setup is backwards from the TT/XT carbs. I am 100% certain on the dirtbikes (mechanical main, CV secondary) because I had to work on one for several weeks.
If you're right about the SRX, then it would be easy to get two mechanical carbs, one from the SRX and the other from a TT or XT350.
Edit; You're wrong. They're the same. Just did an image search of the carbs on an SRX. Damn, I got all excited too....
