So I just flipped out because I realized I have no idea as to the answer of this question.
I'm (theoretically?) leaving on a long trip on Saturday taking my motorcycle on a trailer which should arrive tomorrow. Do I need to insure this to get registered? If not, should I do so anyway?
This could be a total bitch because the car that's towing it is not registered in MA (not my car) but it will be my trailer. Only insurance I have here is motorcycle and I have no idea if anybody will insure a trailer by itself.
Is this going to work out?

alright. guess its off to the insurance co in the morning to explain why i need to insure a trailer without a car insurance policy.
dammit.

You don't need insurance on a trailer, its falls under the vehicle towing it as far as basic liability goes. If you damage your trailer yourself or it contents you have no coverage. If you have full coverage on your bike you would be all set. I am sure you can get coverage on it but my trailer cost me around $700, so I take my chances.

the rmv says you need the rmv-1 form from the insurance agent though.
they also wouldn't insure the trailer seperately as they said it falls under the car insurance policy and is already covered.
the problem is, the car that will be towing it belongs to my gf and is registered out of state so doesn't have MA insurance attached and therefore I assume MA won't let me register it right?

So just spoke with the RMV and they told me in no uncertain terms that I'm totally screwed. Can't do it.
So plan B is to overnight the documents for the trailer to my girlfriends parents (who have her car which will be towing it registered in their state), get them to register the trailer there, and overnight the plates back.
Argh!

hey, the ending of the saga!!
So I found out after speaking to like 5 other insurance companies that a normal motorcycle only policy will actually cover a trailer used solely to trailer motorcycles!!
Which is all I need.
So all I have to do is give them the info for the trailer and they'll enter it into my policy and give me an rmv-1 which i can take to the registry!
hey, only took me ~5 hours on the phone today and a whole bunch of cursing and it's all settled
Thanks for all your help guys (and girls)!

I'm so glad I live in NH sometimes. At least I know my MA income tax is going to good use making up all these laws
