ive got a real clean ninja 250 with a blown motor.... im looking at a few different engines to swap in there.
cr250
raptor 600
I am trying to keep it simple and cheap, no 4cyl, or V twins etc... so that leaves me with a big thumper or parallel twin.
Anyone got some other engine idea's?
I have a nice old 2 stroke 250 single... LOL
I would try something different and go electric.
'busa.

You need to pick a motor that can be used a stressed member of the frame. That really limits you.
I will make some mounts, not worried about that. Electric was a thought.... but there are very few folks who like electric...
Busa...lol, death trap...
old 2 stroke 250.... the HP out of it would be to low... a modern 250cc 2 stroke make nice power![]()
Banshee?
07 S4RS
if its an older one than I have a better idea, sell the frame for scrap.

the ninja body is very nice...cant part it out.
ktm 300 yup, were looking at that as well but the engines are hard to find and $$
Banshee, same thing, motor is $1000 up, then I have to deal with making 2 pipes.... been there done that platform way to much...
What i want to do is get this model up and running....then buy a newer 250 ninja...then fab up a kit for the motor swap. Sell the kit or do the conversions at my shop... so you buy a beginner 250 bike...ride it for a few years...then do the conversion and you have a faster, light sportbike still for cheap money...
Suzuki used to make a big two stroke single ATV motor, unlike the CR500 it's counterbalanced...![]()
RD 350 or 400.
Go fast. Have fun. Repeat.
Quadzilla motor?
07 S4RS
I didnt think the quadzilla was counterbalanced.....Thats why i opeted for the cr250... I put a cr500 in a streetbike... I did the best build ever for this attempt... just to much vibration, even with custom fully isolated rubber mounts.... the body cracked, mirrors rattler bad...dont get me wrong, I could have continued to work on it but it just sucked to much.
then converted to a 115hp banshee motor
banshee was the way to go.... smooth and fast!
The rd motors are to low tech... plus they have 2 cyls/ pipes... trying to make it light.
The cr250 has 48 HP....the stock 250 ninja had 24hp.... I have a cr250 motor now... im leaning this way heavy as I can get cr250 motors everwhere cheap. The quadzillia motor is very hard to find.
I'd love to get a banshee motored street bike.
07 S4RS
We can always build you one.... we have done a bunch...
Yeah but I'm broke as hell lol
I thought you were moving to FL? Or is that just for the winter?
07 S4RS
I am moving, dynotune is not... they have a buyer for the biz... I will open a shop down in FL as well... I can build a bike for you still, ill be around for some time!
I've seen ex500 motors put into 250 frames. Twice the hp, not to much work, not much heavier.
CR250 engine always has the problem of finding a decent lighting coil. Find a solution and you've got gold. How about a TRX250R engine?
well, the cr250 coil can be converted easy and a dc regulator added, I do it on the banshee's. use a ignitech programmable ignition, super simple starts with spark on every kick... I did the same on my cr500 power streetbike.... it did start a whole lot easier.... ever try to start a cr500 engine stock?? my god!
use led lights to save power.... I never had an issues with low batteries....
ex500 engine....kinda boring....I think... Ill checkout the trx250 motor, forgot about that one! I was picturing it in my mind as I had checked it out before but could not rememeber the name.........Thanks for reminding me!!! I am pretty sure they are tons around, tons of parts as well....going to see if they make as much hp as the cr250....
Too bad there's no transmissions on sled engines. A two stroke twin 700-800-900 would be pretty thrilling... Is there room to fit the CVT drive in there somewhere?
Run a chain/belt primary to an HD transmission.
Thinking the sled engine would be better suited to a more rugged and longer chassis. VFR comes to mind...
I actually did a ton of research on the sled engine in a bike frame. My last drag bike I built was going to do exactly that! HD tranny with chain drive... 700cc 2 stroke with nitrous. It would not fit.... just to large, to much weight etc.... I went with a 500cc banshee motor and a turbo... and a billet six speed trans so it would not break... The snomo engine was much larger than you think..then the HD trans in back... it was just getting to long and geometry was getting messed up... don't get me wrong, it can be done! Baker was going to make me a a custom trans, the gearing for 170mph was not working out with stock tranny gears![]()
