Modifying a new gas can

The valve stem idea is slick. Someday someone will have to explain to me how having a gas can that pours fuel all over the ground is better than a can that vents.

Couldn't agree more. Gas all over my tank, my hands, my garage floor. After every storm I poured 4-5 5 gallon cans that I had ready for the generator into the cars and came back in the house smelling like an arsonist.

About the only decent can you can buy now days is a No-Spill.
Even that could benefit from the vent idea.

i use those vp racing fuel jugs almost exclusively now. I do hunt yard sales for the older styles. Ive spilled more gas with those safe gas cans than i ever have speed dumping 5 gallons into my rocking boat.

Yeah. My wife got so annoyed with the smell in the garage I started rolling the snow blower outside just to fuel it up before the storm.

Fueling up should ALWAYS be done outside of a garage or any enclosed space for that matter. I've known personally of 1 garage to go kaboom as a result of this, and heard many more word-of-mouth stories that will send shivers down your spine. Gas vapor + enclosed space + spark equals bad news.

Buy one of those long, skinny neck funnels at an auto parts store. Worth every penny.


These work well, sold online or at Honda dealers.

Yeah, just picked one up. Unscrew the worthless nozzle and pour from can into funnel.

2 of my 4 Briggs and Stratton labelled cans (not sure who really makes them) kind of dented in on 2 sides after I emptied them out. Long live the steel jerry can.

i'll def be doing this to all my cans once i empty them...i hate using a funnel cause you have to pull it out every time you want to check and see if it's near full...

now what's the fix for this style nozzle?...these suck even worse than the one he fixed in the video...

huh, and I thought the "new ones suck" was just my problem

I was using the cyclegear one with a little more success...not sure how it's vented, but gas only comes out when the nozzle is in the tank

i'll def be doing this to all my cans once i empty them...i hate using a funnel cause you have to pull it out every time you want to check and see if it's near full...

With a little bit of creative bending, you can make a hook out of a wire coat hanger so that the funnel doesn't completely obscure the opening into the gas tank.

no more steel cans for me, big source of contaminated fuel, I threw out all m steel cans years ago, when their not full full, condensation rusts the inside

I hat it that manufacturers can't make up their mind on spouts and plastic spouts that break, but you can't buy a replacement cause they changed the design and new spouts won't fit only containers

I also don't like that they don't make simple 2 cap (one smaller pouring spout and a larger filler opening) that the made years ago

The issue is that the volatile components of the fuel migrate through the plastic over time. And the volatile parts are what you burn. So the issue then becomes how long you are storing it and under what conditions. I use the No Spill can for all our "ready" gas for lawnmower, snow thrower etc.

If I empty the steel cans I'm going to use a product which used to be called "Sheath" but is now called Barricade.

No Spill, Eagle, Justrite and others still make cans in the US. Importing fuel cans would not protect a manufacturer any more than building them in the US.
Blitz likes to highlight the frivolous lawsuits, but not the ones where their product was properly used and still caused injury.
Their plant was purchased by a Canadian manufacturer, Scepter.

However you can have an LLC to resell foreign cans who's assets are small so bankruptcy is easy and cheap

I just ordered a spout and cap as an experiment to see if it will fit my cans and NOT stick out
