My mini review of my new crossplane R1.

So i was able to get some miles in on my new crossplane r1 and figured id put a little review of it on here. i bought it having never ridden one and going by the many differing reviews of it. I kinda took all the reviews and mashed them into one and made a judgement call and went ahead and bought it a few weeks ago. There are a few threads i started about it already so i wont go into those details. This will be more for someone looking at buying one or like the position i was in- why arent people buying them?
Overall it seems to be a decent bike. I dont have many miles on it yet so eveything is subject to change. I guess the thing with the r1 is you have to modify to really unlock its potential. From the factory it has alot and i mean alot of downfalls. These are some of the ones ive noticed and the common fix to them.

-Weight. Its a pig. About 475lbs wet. Nearly 75lbs more than my old gsxr. Its not so bad riding it, it has a nice solid feel to it. I havent really put it in the twisties yet but i think itll be ok. It is a bitch to move about the garage though. You can really feel the weight. It reminds me very much of a zx7. Its fairly hard and expensive to really get the weight down too. A full exhaust only saves about 15-20 lbs on a good day.

-Power. This is were the crossplane comes into play. While the motor maybe an inline 4 the effects of the crossplane give it a very much v-twin feel. Its got massive low-end grunt that just keeps building like an inline. It only has about 150hp on a good day. Supposedly unleashing the ecu brings it up to about 165ish and fixes a host of it other issues. Its not as fast as my old 06 gsxr 1000 but im still breaking it in so im not really pushing but i know it wouldnt keep up. Reminds me of a tl1000r in the lower rpms. The modes have a vastly different feels to them too.

-Engine Output. This is were it gets tricky. The bike is really poor in this area and i have no idea why yamaha is even selling it like this. The throttle is super, super sensitive. Its not so bad on standard and B mode mapping but A mode is borderline undriveable. Its so touchy and sensitive to inputs the bike just jumps around alot. Unless your on the track nothing about its traits are confidence inspiring.
It also has the hardest hitting engine braking ive ever had on a bike. It feels like someone is stomping on the rear brakes when you roll off the throttle. Its absolutely horrid. There is no coasting on this bike.
It also has bad vibrations like a twin. Its pretty harsh if your below 6k rpms and give it any gas. Im told this goes away abit when its broken in. Just cruising is silky smooth though. Very tame and soft.
Unleashing the ecu is said to fix all these problems.

-Clutch. Its a horror show. The piss poor slipper clutch combined with a super tall first gear make launching impossible. Taking off from a dead stop results in lurching and juddering until you get to a higher rpm. Your constantly fighting the slipper at every takeoff. Im told some bikes are worse than others and it looks like mine maybe in the bad camp. There are 2 fixes on the market to fix this though. One is a Brocks kit that eliminates the slipper part of the clutch and the other is a graves kit. Whats odd about the Graves kit is it using existing yamaha parts to fix the slipper part. Why yamaha doesnt do it i dont know. It needs to be fixed though. Either kit is around $100. Going down a tooth on the front sprocket and/or adding stiffer clutch springs is said to help as well.

-sound. It really is unique. Sounds like a small block chevy. I cant wait to get the exhaust opened up.

-ride quality. Its pretty stable. Havent messed with it too much but it did ok today under not the best conditions. The under tail exhaust does kick off some heat. On a 50 degree day i could feel it heating my back lower body. It must be terrible on a 100 degree day. Getting rid of the cats and new slip-ons are the fix. I could probably ride it for hundreds of miles without issue. The sensitive throttle, engine breaking and motor vibrations are the only issues (and they are big ones) that really hurt this area.

Overall its a kind of a disappointing bike in stock form. Certainly not the class leader but its not all that bad either. Its not for someone who wants the best bike going. Everyone of its short coming can be blamed squarely on yamaha and everything has a supposed fix. Unleashing the ecu and upgrading the clutch are the first order of business for every new owner. After its been gone through and upgraded its supposed to be a fantastic bike. Ill update this later on after i break it in and do the mods. Ill also update this as i see and experience more things. I think the bike has the basis to be a good bike but itll never be great. Luckily i didnt buy it to have the greatest. I wanted something that was a bit unique and this bike at this cost is in a class by itself. Its just a shame that it has so many quirks that could turn off potential buyers that yamaha should have sorted immediately. I will say if i bought this bike not knowing about its issues and/or it didnt have the proper mods to correct them id be pretty upset.

Update 6/1- Got about 1500 miles on the bike now. Its completely broken in and is pretty much how its gonna be without mods to fix trouble areas. I broke it in nice and slow and didnt beat on it at all until its first service at 600 miles. Some things got better and some stayed the same. Here are my updates-

Weight- still heavy. Added a leo vince exhaust and dropped about 5 lbs so no biggie. Its stabile at speeds and tracks well.

Power- Very strong through its entire rpm range. Its just like a high revving twin. Couple of my friends have dynoed them too. Almost always 145-150 in stock form. A ecu flash brings it up to 160+ pretty quickly. Im still waiting to do it though.

Engine output- Still shitty. The throttle is really twitchy and almost dangerous when trying to wheelie. Its almost impossible to be smooth and roll the throttle. Very herky jerky bike. The different mapping mods Soften the harshness abit but kills the power in the process. It is a very buzzy bike to. About 45 minutes of riding and i cant feel my fingers anymore. Its pretty bad. In the low revs the whole bike shakes and vibrates. Ive ridden a few others and they all do it. Im getting used to the overly harsh engine breaking but mainly because im not riding my other bikes. A ecu flash is still recommended to take care of these issues.

Clutch- Still funny off idle. I basically slip the shit out of it to take of some what fast. it will never do a hard launch in its stock configuration however. Drag racer this bike is not. Had a friend swap gearing on his bike and it improved but didnt solve the issue.

Sound- With the leo's on it it really is crazy sounding. I get compliments every time i ride. Its a little loud for me but its bearable. Sounds like a race car with a v8. The leo pipes themselves are complete shit and i will never recommend anything they sell to anyone again but they do the job, however poorly they were built and assembled.

Ride quality- Its harsh and buzzy but doable. Whats killing me is the heat. Its is so hot i want to cry sitting in traffic. Even at highway speeds my back is still washed with heat. Its pretty uncomfortable on my inner thighs. The leos helped abit and im told ditching the cats are the key to getting rid of the heat. This is a bike where its absolutely impossible to wear shorts on. On a plus at around 40 -50 degrees ambiant temps the bike is quite nice to ride. The heat is bad at all and keeps you nice and toasty. Usually i dont like riding below 50 but with this bike i can dip to the low 40's and still be ok. As stated before the vibrtions coming through the grips make this bike hard to ride any distance. One odd thing about the controls that i still cant figure out is the clutch lever was killing my fingers. I use 2 fingers and the lever was giving me blisters on the knuckle of one of the fingers i keep on the bars. Ive never had it happen on any bike ive ever owned before. It got to the point where it was uncomfortable to shift. Rotating the assembly helped but didnt solve the issue. I ended up having to buy some shorty asv type levers. Fixed the problem but it shouldnt have been there to begin with.

At this point i usually tell people its a poor bike to consider buying. I cant really say to many good things about it other than looks and sound. The torquey motor is really nice but comes at a cost. Add to the fact that at about 1200 miles my cam chain tensioner crapped out and is going in for service (known issue but yamaha didnt want to fix it until it becomes a problem) i cant really recommend it. Id say just about any other 1000 is a better buy. Hate to say it but its true. I made a mistake buying the bike and im stuck with it so i will make the best out of it.

Only thing I can say is, you're very lucky you didn't find a used Aprilia RSV4...and I've heard Ducati is even worse than the Ape.
Makes me wonder what changes were made (i never looked into it) from my 2009 to your year. Clutch was silky smooth, as was the engine taking off from a stop in my 09. 1st was tall, but it never stumbled or bucked trying to take off at low RPMs

How does a slipper clutch have any effect on acceleration?

Re: My mini review of my new crossplane R1.

its not supposed to but with the new r1's yamaha deleted a few clutch parts and it doesnt mesh right. Graves simply sells you the factory parts to get it back to what it should be. I dont think its the slipper part per say but the clutch in general. brocks fix actually does away with the slipper part to fix it so it can be launched hard at the strip.
Nothing changed in the years of the crossplane but some have more issues than others. The clutch is very common but not everyones suffers from it.

Thanks for the brutally honest review. I'll be watching to see if the patches work for you. It is interesting to see all the issues, because my 06 suffers from none of them, except for 1st gear being so tall that it does take a good rev to take off quickly. Regearing the final drive will take care of that.

What he said. My 848 was super tall in stock gearing. Going -1 on the front was the cheapest and easiest fix. The RSV4 is better geared than my 848 was, no idea how it compares to the R1 though.

Ya, the earlier model r1's, especially the 08, is consider the better of the bikes. It seems odd to me that yamaha has gone backwards with alot of this bike. The clutch in mine is the same as in yours except yamaha took out 3 parts and its a piss poor clutch now. From what i have i read the earlier clutches are fantastic with zero issues. Looks like they ruined a good thing. At least i can just look at your bikes microfiche and order the missing parts to get it right.

As for the tall first gear ive already ordered a 16 tooth sprocket for it. Its a common complaint and thats the common solution. I dont have the exact speeds and rpms but i seem to remember doing 30 or so in first and only being at about 4k rpms. Add in the bad engine breaking and its not too easy to control.

As for your 2006 GSXR1000, I think the wet weight was 439 lbs. That bike had no emission materials to cut down the power and by many is considered one of the best if not the best liter bike of the last decade. It seems like a few tasteful mods can make a big difference: aftermarket lighter exhaust, smaller sprocket, maybe a power commander...it is a beautiful bike to look at

From what I have read, the newest R1 is the least favorite of all the testers I have read. BIKE magazine is my favorite and they just didnt get what Yamaha did with the latest bike. Not sure I saw in your post what year you have but BIKE said to NOT sell your last gen R1 to buy the newer, worse bike.

I know the R6 got worse as the years went on too. Most if not all of it when relating to the R6 was because of emissions.

i more or less knew what i was getting into when i bought it. i wanted something different than everyone else. i looked at the aprilia's, ktm's, duc's and mv agusta's. i just didnt like them or didnt think they were worth the asking price. Ive got an 06 1000 already along with 2 750's that i love dearly but i didnt like the new ones at all. The R1 is unique because no one has them and i really didnt want a true supersport liter bike, i really wanted a big twin and this is both.

I have a feeling the bike is wonderful on the track. most if not all my issues are just street orientated. Im sure it would fall behind the other 1000's but i think that would be the weight and hp difference doing it, not something wrong with the bike.
Like i said before, doing a couple mods to it should make it into a great bike. In all likely hood the one you rode had already been toyed with. Once i get some more miles on it ive got an exhaust, gearing, ecu flash, clutch and a few other recommended parts coming for it. Im going to update my review as i progress with the bike.
I still think its a really nice bike and has alot of positives. Its just too bad yamaha has done some of things it did to it.

Re: My mini review of my new crossplane R1.

In Sept, I went out and bought a leftover '11. I was searching for a commuter, a twisties toy, and a track weapon. I am a twin guy for the beginning, and have never owned an i4. Hell, I even raced a twin! So initially I went looking for a big twin since I was comming off of a TLR (street/track) and an SV650 (race/track). I didn't want a Ducati since i was looking for a semi-comfortable commuter, didn't really care for the RSV-r's, couldn't find a RSV4 in my price range, and used RC8's are non-existant. So I went to the crossplane. The R1 is NOT the fastest or lightest of the liter bikes...but it has soul (which I never expeted) and puts a shit eating grin on my face everytime I start it up - ALMOST as big as the TLR! Starting is a little quirky with the way the clutch is and the tall 1st gear, but I purchased a -1 front sprocket to cure that (winter mod). It rumbles like a twin, vibrates like a twin - but smoother..that will make sense to some people. It pulls hard like my TL did, except it revs to the moon! To me, it feels light...it is definitely very flickable through the twisties...it seems like the weight is very low...for me, it is not hard to throw around and it handles mighty nicely. Feels very planted mid corner. I am actually very pleased with the motor. commuting, it is comfy (for me), 75mph is around 5500rpms - and it doesn't mind being there. you don't need to be in the upper revs to get the power to the ground....The only downsides to the bike out of the box - clutch is weird and the tall first gear...I am hoping the -1 does the trick and the brakes....some people like them, but my SV had KILLER brakes on it, so I'd like to get it to almost that point. I picked up a brembo RCS, steel lines and Vesrah pads. I'm hoping that will do the trick....Other than that, I REALLY enjoy this bike out of the box and can't wait to put many more miles on her! I did 1200 miles in the 1.5 months before I put her away.

    Winter mods -
    I already have slip-ons
    mid pipe
    BMC filter
    PCV
    custom tune
Flash the ECU to de-restrict it
    Brembo RCS
    Steel lines
    Vesrah pads
Spring for my weight - if I don't like it, I'll buy a new rear shock and upgrade the front valves
    Some carbon bling (of course)

I CAN'T WAIT to get her on the track this season!

Re: My mini review of my new crossplane R1.

have you flashed it yet or are you waiting?
Do you think my review is a fair one and mostly accurate based on your experiences?

One of main concerns about the bike is the harsh vibrations coming from it. Does your really shake the footpegs if you gas it in a tall gear? I think it may be just a product of the bike but i want to make sure, It really is harsher than i though and ive seen no complaints about it really. Only that it gets better over time.

I feel the brakes are ok but i havent really pushed them. Ill probably just end up doing lines and maybe pads, With the engine braking the way it is on the bike i think it maybe masking some weakish braking though. Everyone complains about its brakes but usually after the reflash to eliminate the excess engine braking. I guess ill find out eventually.

I haven't flashed it yet. I am waiting to do everything at once - filter, pcv, midpipe, flash, and tune. I found a guy over on the R1 site that will flash it for very little cost. On that note, once I get the custom tune, I am going to take the PCV off and have him re-flash it with my custom map...one less electronic item to fail....

I think your review is fair. I can see where you think the bike is a little rough. Coming from a twin, I think the vibrations and buzziness are are very mild...but like I said in my post, I've never owned an i4, so for me, this bike is very smooth My bike does have vibrations in the rpm midrange, in taller gears, while giving gas...for me this is very normal. I really don't know how a 'smooth' i4 reacts...

I love the stock engine braking, but again, it's because I am used to it. The nice thing about the flash is that the braking is adjustable....so you can get it set up however you like it! (very nice option).

I don't really see any real issue with the stock brakes....If I wan't so spoiled from my SV, I prolly would only do steel lines and new pads....my race SV had a gsxr front end, brembo master, steel lines, vesrah pads, R6 calipers and oversized wave rotors...THAT set-up was rediculous...I'd like to get the R1 as close to that as possible - but only because I'm so used to it....

Re: My mini review of my new crossplane R1.

I have a similar brake set up on my 750. braided lines, radial mount calipers, brembo master, floating disks, with ebc hh pads. Stops great but overkill for the street. Im gonna try to keep this bike tame for the steets. It probably wont ever see the track.
For the flash there are guys on here that will do it to and are local. Some charge alot and some are free. I might go with the interface kit and just have the options to do it anytime i want and for others.
I can understand your twin comparisons. Ive had a few myself (ex500, rc51, tl1000r) and this bike is very much a twin in feel. If it was an I4 there would be almost no vibs and it would just go.

Which slip-ons do you have and which mid pipe did you get? Are you going to ditch the ais system too?
I strongly suggest when you have the system flashed you lower the engine braking alot. 20% seems to be everyones favorite number. I dont know how much of a difference it makes on the bike but any little bit less will be worth it. The excess engine braking it has now is no where near a normal I4. The bike would be worlds smoother without it.

If you were going to track it, i would say wait. I heard flash tune is coming out with a bluetooth interface that also does gps tracking with stats for only a little more ching....If you could pm me your connections, that would be great. The guy I was going to send mine to is in Chicago....I'd rather hook up a local!

I got the M4 mid. 2 reasons - 1. sportbiketrackgear has them and I am sponsored by them and 2. It sounds like they have are a great fit out of the box. If SBTG didn't carry them, I would've gone with the danmoto due to price point. I have GYTR slip ons - they were 'thrown in' when I bought the bike...

I am absolutely going to ditch the ais system and turn it off in the flash. I could be wrong, but I don't think a custom tune would be accurate with it still on and working. I am also going to do the airbox mod while I'm in there.....
I've also heard 20% is a good number...I'll go with that....I am also going to have the injectors turned on during 0% throttle to smooth out the on/off/on twitch that is there....

I will start the work prolly around Feb. I'm getting the serious itch now. Once all the mods are done, I'm REALLY going to want to get out and ride. I am trying to prolong that itch as much as possible....

Re: My mini review of my new crossplane R1.

im out riding it now. its cold as shit but it helps me keep the revs down while i break it in.
i was looking at the danmoto pipe but im worried it may age like shit. im probably gonna pop for a ti midpipe.
im probably just gonna do race baffles fir now till i can hear a few exhausts. i like the m4 and yosh but until i hear them id rather not spend the money. of course with the popularity of these bikes i may never hear them. ive also looked into having ones shipped here from overseas that we cant get. quill, tiger and a couple others are willing to for a price. im going to england in a few months so i may buy one and ship it myself if i can save some money.

Very cool....From what I read, the danmoto's are pretty popular now that they fixed the fitment issues. I like my GYTR pipes actually. Not too loud, but not obnoxious either. I've heard the Akra's...and they sound great....I've heard the Toce....WAY to loud for my taste. That's it though. honestly, if mine didn't come with the GYTR's, I prolly would've gone with the race baffles too...

I really wanted the toce but everyone says there loud. Like d&d loud. So im pretty much settled on baffles and a mid pipe.
