    Help with 1st gen SV650

OK - so I know there's probably a whole bunch of threads out there for what I'm trying to do, but I don't feel like sorting through everything to figure this out (yes, I'm being lazy).

I want to change out the lighting/license plate set-up on my 1st gen SV650s (2001), and replace it with something a little sleeker looking. I'm looking for suggestions on fender eliminators / blinkers / License plate holders that will a) clean up the back end, b) be street legal, c) not cost a fortune. Any suggestions on products, or what has worked for fellow SV riders would be greatly appreciated!

Pic of current rear set-up attached.

Might not be many SV specific fender eliminator tips here, since many SVs here are raced, but I'll bet there are over on SVRider.com's forums. If you're not a member there, you might consider registering as well.

Most aftermarket Turn signals are not DOT-approved and are therefore not Street legal. Turn signals on a bike have to be spaced within a certain distance.

But few cops will hassle you for those.

LED turn signals are great, but you have to install an electronic flasher unit that you can get from Radioshack for about $5. I believe you have to splice in a few resistors as well.

Some people get LED turn signals from Rizzoma. But they're pricey. Ebay is you best bet, something like this.

As for the license plate frame, I would just trace your design on some cardboard, then bring it to a welder shop and have them cut it out of sheetmetal for you.

If you want Jesse, We can design a plate holder/plate light/turnsignal undertail for your SV here and make it out of sheet aluminum. I have plenty here. We can put in that inner fender thing that Rossco painted. All you'll have to get is the directionals and a plate light ( but I might have something that will work until you are ready too.. )

Buell turn signals are cheap and a legal smaller alternative to the stockers, but the flash rate is frantic unless you splice in a resistor thingy somewhere.

A ghetto workaround for fender/undertail replacement is to turn the license plate bracket upside down, use the bottom mounting holes on the plate to tuck it up higher, then hack off the fender as high as you want while not needing to replace anything else. Won't be as clean as an undertail, though.

Re: Help with 1st gen SV650

when my SV was a street bike i hacked off the mud flap and removed the plate light. IIRC, i left the factory plate holder but flipped it over. i also removed the blinkers, left the mounts and just put smaller stalk type signals. i didnt have a plate light but you can get license plate bolts that have lights built into them that work pretty good.
with that all said you can probably find an actual fender eliminator kit for it fairly cheap.
now that i think about it, i may have an actual fender eliminator for that bike in my shed somewhere.

Sheppo think you might be able to make a fender eliminator for a street triple?

We can only try... If you don't like it ( before we take off the stock stuff ) you haven't lost a thing except time... All I am supplying is the aluminum, tools, time and a little knowledge... very little knowledge.. LOL

Thanks Sheppo!! That would be fantastic! I'm not even sure where to start with this project, so any assistance is greatly appreciated!!!

Rossco - are there any turn signals that you know of that wouldn't cause much of an issue (I'm happy if it passes inspection!)? I keep hearing about "Buell lights" but I"m not sure which kind I should be looking at

if i can find the fender eliminator that i have relatively easily then you can use it as a template if you want

Can't remember where I got mine, but the general consensus seems to be Ebay. It's also a second gen, but on Ebay that probably won't matter. You can always just hacksaw it and play around.
