18% the hill on the road coming up to my house is steeper than that and longer (about ½ mile), I've never tried racing up it when snow covered (yet) just normal 35-40 mph obeying the speed limit speeds
I think if I ran a Hakkapeliitta , I could put those guys to shame with my otherwise stock V-strom

Going to guess it was more of the Inaugural Snow Hill Climb and Harley Davidson was the main sponsor who also took the time to build a Harley hill climber to include in the Competition.
Harley Davidson was a sponsor of the Xgames in general I believe. I was watching some of the snowboarding and snowcross events and saw a number of advertisements and clothing advertising for Harley
Awesome .....
Now put a track instead of a tire out back and make a mountain road course.

Seems like it would make more sense for them to sponsor an event where their bike would prove to be the best...not that I can think of any such event.
HD just put out a press release that they are laying off factory workers due to flat sales. Why are their bikes not selling? They are state of the art NASA inspired high tech one size fits all two wheeled magic. Such an embarrassment to the USA.

Which HD motors look exactly like Superduke mills and need radiators?
In the first run, 97 is on an HD, at 2:18 you can clearly see the motor. His opponent, 293 is clearly on a KTM, at 2:55 you can see the cases in a stock KTM frame, 3:00 shows the other side. 293 got the bronze.
In the second run, 896 shows his cases at 7:13, again appears to be KTM v-twin, gets the silver. 2 with the gold I can't quite tell, never get a good view of his engine. 8:02 might be the best, I can see a big cooler, but it might be an oil cooler? Frame is modified, if it IS a sportster mill in there it's the shortest I've ever seen. Hydraulic clutch... 10:00 has another glance but still not a good look.
Gold medal match winner sure didn't sound like a harley.

Harley Davidson is like a political party. Whenever they try to do anything new or different, their base customer rejects the change, so they just continue with the same old thing at the risk of not attracting new customers.

motorsports sales as whole were down in 2017 with 2018 speculation looking flat... at best. HD already rolled back production for 2018 models. its both surprising, and not surprising that they are shutting down the KC plant. sucks that 400 people are losing their jobs, but Hd took a huge hit thanks to the new trump tax plan. they had to pay out some huge tax on a recall. i wont pretend to know the details about it but word is that it was the majority as to why their financials were so bad this year.
that whole ducati thing is old news. HD showed interest and then changed their minds for whatever reason. its irrelevant.
bottom line, lots of contributing factors led to this closure. economy, trump, production, sales...i can assure you it wasnt marketing.
When I start my KTM in the morning, rules are broken. Its inevitable...
