I have stopped at this place about 90% of the rides I do to VT, & have heard the unfortunate news that due to the massive storm, & flood surge down the river it sits on has been severly damaged, possibly beyond repair. At this point the owner is not sure if they will repair/rebuild or not.
Very sad as this place was great! Great food at very reasonable prices.

The Alchemist (a well known pub/brewery) in Waterbury (which, I might add, is an unfortunate town name when you get buried in water) also shut down, likely for good. The good news for them is that they are currently opening a canning line, so their most famous beer (Heady Topper) can live on.

That stinks about Dots. I had been there a few times although usually avoid that little town by going 100. It was a nice place to stop and for being that small they took credit cards which made it easier in larger groups of rider....
It's pretty hard to come back from this.

I'm sorry to say, I expect we'll be losing quite a few great Vermont restaurants. I'll be curious to see if the Rochester Cafe reopens, for example; no idea what shape it's in.

Holy hell, Thats a complete rebuild required as the foundation is fucked...
Hope all our VT members and family's are ok. If not speek up for yourself or someone you know that could use help. Hopefully others more fortunate members that survived after the storm can try & help.

One of my coworkers had over 5' of water in the first floor of his house. The only thing on the second floor was a bedroom for his kids. He had just poured footings for a new garage. He didn't have time to relocate any belongings from his first floor or even get both vehicles out of the driveway.
The company we work for has been pulling for him big time. We sent an excavator, dump truck and skid steer over there to fill in the garage foundation. There's been a crew of carpenters and other volunteers up there for the last two days helping him remove and dry his belongings. Now the wait begins for the insurance adjusters to arrive before he can begin gutting the house and rebuilding. Luckily he and his family have a place to stay at a friends place that's out of town.
There are many other folks like him and some that are much worse off. It makes me count my blessings and feel more than a little guilty about going racing this weekend.

I just watched an interview with that lady that owns Dots on the TV in the Cafe at work. It's sad.

We used to stop at Dot's all the time on the Vt rides of the old days, sad to see for sure.

had breakfast there two weeks ago. That's really too bad, it's a great little place
Irene must have had a grudge against restaurants or something. Things here are fine, the river across the road crested and got into the road (never before, in 20+ years, have I seen it at this height) but no trouble in this town. A town or so north, near RT 232 in Groton is the Upper Valley Grill. The river flows behind the store normally, during / after Irene it was flowing in front of the store.
The Kanc is / was? also closed between Lincoln and Conway. Rumor had it a bridge was taken out at Lincoln woods, but that wasn't the case. Needless to say, Lincoln was a ghost town when I went exploring.
The Rochester Cafe was, I believe, serving Rochester residents while they were effectively cut off, so I think they're probably in good shape (I'm also not sure where any water would have flowed from above them).
The devastation is surreal, as is seeing my town on the national news as a disaster zone (and as is a six-hour trip to get groceries—the only way I could take the bike out of town was via a series of class 4, legal trail, and washed-out class 3 roads.)

Confirmed yesterday, the Rochester Cafe is open for business (although you aren't supposed to get there right now, given that all roads into town are limited-access, you will be able to enjoy a stop once the roads open up).
I am the pessimist
After most Vermont's floods there are permanent changes. There is very little real economic power in Vermont so almost impossible for little (non ski) towns to come back.
I am a fan of VT and hopes for the best
The Rochester Cafe, Sunday, September 4:
Maynard's snack bar, Moretown, Vermont, also on Sunday, September, 4:
Both of these restaurants are in communities that were hit hard but that are well on their way to rebuilding. There are a relatively small number of folks who suffered catastrophic personal loss, but a much greater amount of damage was to roadways and bridges. Those are being repaired at an astounding rate, and Vermont will likely be happily accepting tourist dollars for foliage season, nevermind ski season.
There are certainly roads that won't be 100% for a year or two—some of the rebuilding will be temporary fixes due to the limited time left in this construction season—but it's already far, far better than it was a week ago, and I expect that in the next three or four weeks, the roadway and bridge repairs will continue to progress rapidly.

Hey...while we are all reminiscing about the great times we've all had in Wilmington and at Dot's...there's something you can do.
