Hi Guys,
Have any of you bought bikes with no titles and got them registered? I've read that you can just send in a bill of sale and some money to VT and get plates in return. Then transfer the registration to MA. Good or bad idea (bike is very cheap, looking for a fixer upper to spend some time on)?
I''d want to know why it has no title to ensure I'm not buying a stolen bike... and contributing to the problem that exists.
The bike must be at least 15 years old or under 300 cc to register it in VT with no title.

It's an 07 250, so I'm good?
Yes a bill of sale and properly filled out VT DMV registration form will get you registered, if it isn't stolen.

Personally can't imagine a worse fixer-upper than one that is only going to be worth 1/4 to 1/2 of a bike with a valid paper trail.
VT (like Maine) does not title bikes under 300cc. So you can get a registration, but not title.
When I registered a Maine 250 without a title in MA, they wanted the previous registration signed over. I'm now told the RMV is requiring an official letter stating this policy (no titling 299 and smaller) as well.
So while you could put a VT plate and ride around, it's unlikely you could ever get a MA title.

per Garandman when I got my xr250r plated in MA a few months ago, it was plated in Maine before with no title. Seller signed me over the expired registration and his ins policy, handed me his plate and best of all gave me a signed official Maine DMV letterhead stating that a bike under 300c requires no title and a contact name and #. When i went to the MA dmv the regs say so long as you have a prior registration, it is allowable in MA to be registered. I even showed the MA DMV the regs. DMV lady said sorry she would not register it, very curtly. I then showed her the signed Maine DMV letterhead and she walked to the back room came back and said they could register it/title it.
hmmmm......

The counter clerks cab be difficult, you have to ask for a Supervisor.
The best part? Mass law HAS the relevant title requirements for Maine and other states noted along with the fact that they accept this.
