$5 "Wood"craft rear bike stand

Soooo, needed to change my rear sprocket and couldn't wait for the rear stand, so fabbed one up myself. (Did I mention I'm a carpenter by trade?)

I had to make a few adjustments...I forgot to stabilize it length wise, so it was a little rocky. Who says you need to spend $150 on a rear stand??

But seriously, I'm ordering a Vortex next week. Just needed something in a pinch and thought you guys might get a kick out of it.

You don't need no stinkin' plans. Buy a 2x4, cut the base so it's wide enough to fit the pieces, cut the height a couple inches higher than height of the rear, cut the side supports at 45°, screw everything together, done. Took me about 15 minutes (maybe 20, I'm anal retentive).

This will probably sound crazy, but I leave the bike in neutral and roll it back toward the stand, then lift the rear end by the subframe under the seat and set it on to the stand. I have to move the stand a little in to place with my foot.

It's not as easy of a set up as using the leverage of the stand with wheels to lift the bike, but it worked in a pinch. Thank god I didn't have to lift the front. The rear is so much easier to lift than front.

I see what you're talking about, that's the collar that goes on the right side of the axle between the bearings and the caliper.

If you notice in the second set of pictures, there's a brace I added to the front and back to make it more stable. When I originally built it, all I was thinking was side to side, but found out I had to keep an eye on movement front to back, especially when trying to put the wheel back on. Had a few close calls.

Thanks everybody. I really just posted it as a joke. I mean, I really did build and use it, but it's not ideal by any means.

The funny part about this whole thing was I needed to change the rear sprocket. I had a Vortex on and just stripped all the teeth off last week. I have a parts bike that I took the rear sprocket off, but didn't realize until I had it mounted on the wheel and was going to put it back on that it was for a different sized chain.

I was trying to match a 520 chain to a 525 or 530 sprocket. Lesson is - check to make sure the used sprocket that you take off your parts bike to get you through the rest of the season until you can afford to buy a nice DID/Stealth replacement is the right size before you go through the effort of building a rear stand and have your bike half apart. (long lesson, I know)
