I have a track day on Monday (may 20) and all of a sudden my track bike won't start
It's a 1995 ZX6r. I took the carbs off this morning to clean them and after I got everything all back together the bike will not start. It will turn and turn and turn and turn and sometimes backfire SUPER loud and shoot some flames out the back.
Here's what I've checked:
Fuel pump is pumping
gas lines are all in tact
bowls have gas in them
I need help ASAP. Thanks in advance
Did you put the carb springs back in?

Check the plugs?

Have you ever pulled the carbs before? These bikes don't prime. You just have to shut there wait for it to fill the bowls. If its not that make sure you properly seated the plug wires and that the gas lines aren't kinked.
Edit just re read and noticed you said the bowls had gas in them. Pull a plug wire and put an old plug in it and make sure its sparking.

I just had the same thing happen on a bike 91 Honda,we pulled the carbs on.
A little starting fluid gave the cylinders the fuel they need to re-establish the flow.

Worst case... show up at the track on Sunday evening... lots of bike work will be happening and you'll have 50 people to offer advice.
I do plan on being at the track around 600 on Sunday. Looks like I'll be bringing both the track bike and street bike.......just in case.
Here's what I've done since the first post this evening:
pulled all the plugs and made sure they all had spark
checked all the plug boots to make sure they had a good connection
Pulled off the PAIR covers and cleaned out the little reed valves underneath them (holy crap were they dirty)
opened bowl drains a few times each to make sure there was gas in the bowls
lots and lots of swearing
Do a little more swearing, check out the Kawi boards for something crazy we haven't thought of , and we'll see you Sunday!
If it turns over and has spark, all it needs is air and fuel to go BOOM!
I would have said ignition problem. But if you have spark..
Good luck man.
Had something similar happen to me after cleaning my bike's carbs (1996 ZX6R). Bike had an erratic idle, would have a mini-backfire every now and then, and ultimately the engine would eventually cut out. After that, the bike just wouldn't start.
After so many times trying to start it, the battery went and I couldn't start it at all. I hooked it up to a battery tender. Once that was done, I hooked it up to a carb synch. #s 3, 4, and 5 were all fine, but #1 had essentially zero pressure. With a few turns of a screw, they balanced out and the bike started, idled and revved fine.
Not sure if it'll work for you, but it might be worth a shot. Good luck!

Based on the symptoms, it's either not enrichening (check for proper choke cable operation), or there's a big air leak preventing a rich enough mixture to start cold.
Does the 95 have a throttle position sensor?
The backfiring has me thinking there's some sort of timing problem involved.
(Sorry, I have to ask, just because it's a mistake I've made). The spark plug cables are on the right cylinders, correct?
No tips on the 95.

Check for air leaks or that you put the diaphrams in correctly.

e No new ideas here. Just try what's already been suggested start with starting fluid. If it won't start with starting fluid you have more than just a fueling issue. Sync the carbs. Make sure the air filter and box are clean. Make sure the choke works.
Shameless promotion in case you want to double down and build a badass f series out of two bikes:

And the bike is running!!! Yeah, Peter Kates!

Since two things were done at once, I'm not positive which solved the actual issue... maybe Pete is?
Pete pulled some of the jets and rechecked them - but I believe also used fresh gas. I'm not sure the fresh gas was tried earlier in the troubleshooting process?
Just re-read the posts and don't see anything about fresh gas... and I don't think the O.P mentioned that the bike was coming out of storage - which might have lead some of us to think about the gas?
Anywho, when I went to bed the motor was running... hopefully the rest of the bike passes tech as it looked a little rough.![]()

It passed tech and I know I saw the bike on track Tuesday afternoon so it must have run pretty well too!
