Searching for a unicorn...
2-stroke, full size, street legal in CA - combo desert/trail machine that *can* do light MX, but most importantly goes down the street so I can ride it 4-5 times/week
I've been searching - WR250/KDX200/RMX250/EXC300 - because they had lighting stators, but the market is dry. All bikes are $3,500++. I saw a WR250 for $1,400, YZ250 for $2,000 (with desert tank and extra wheels!), and KDX200 for free, but they sold quickly.
what other 2-stroke models were commonly made street legal?
wikipedia says KTM EXC 125/200/200/300 were 2-strokes...but I don't know any of their other models.

If you want a Cali plated smoker, expect to pay.
That is all.
Ps: they SUCK going down the road.

they're pretty lousy for extended riding, yeah...but I want it for:
1.) around town...I live in a city, so the speeds don't get above 30-40mph. I love getting home from work, and ripping the bike to the gym...stopping in the gravel sections in the industrial areas on the way. Street bike duty = FZR600
2.) there's a rocky fire road up the mountain near work (<20 mins!) that only allows street plated bikes. I hate that I only go twice/month with the YZ250...that place near work, I can ride every other saturday/sunday evening (or if I'm motivated, Sunday mornings)
and you can get 'em cheap...just gotta find:
-the dude that doesn't know what he has
-the ad that does NOT say it's street legal (but in a picture, you see the CA plate on the back)
-an older bike
less than a month ago, a dude got a plated KDX200 from his brother, and he didn't really know much about working on bikes, and gave it away for free. I also saw a '92 WR250, plated for $1,400 and a '94 YZ250 plated for $1,800 (with desert tank, extra rims/tires)...so they're out there...just gotta wait.

'Honda' CRE250, they were sometimes imported as a different brand that I don't recall. It's a CR with a heavier flywheel, lighting coil and enduro/woods re-valved suspension.
wow cool!

The cre's were not street legal. They were just woodsy race bikes.

like these guys said, Cali is going to be tough but i'll search my Husky forum. i see plated WR250/300's pop up on there but i bet they're more up north in WA.
Husky does make road going 2-strokes with oil pumps (WRE, SM) but not here in the states.
Beta 200RR
ahh, biznitch...thanks though clinton...and even if it was a plated husky, it would need to have been plated in CA
yes, it's hard to convert, so the key is you just gotta find a 2002 or older 2-smoker that already has the plate. Those will stay street legal forever
that's why I'm casting my net wide on all models that someone would've converted...kdx/rmx/wr/exc...bring it on!
I've seen plenty of plated 4-strokes (WR250/450, YZ426, KL(X/R)300/600/650, XR250/400/600/650, DR(z)200/250/400/600/650), but I really want a smoker!!
this one looks good!

"project not completed yet, but..."
yeah
I've seen good deals out there...I even test rode one (that I should've bought)...just a bit of a unicorn hunt

huh....so aside from the cre250, honda never made a woodsy enduro smoker?
Yamaha is all WR's, kawi is all KDX200/220/250, and Suzuki is all RMX250
tried to snag this one...but the seller is intent that he has a hen laying golden eggs

you don't have any WR250 frames in your bucket of spares with a CA title?
I'm getting very close to just buying this restored '97 300EXC
price is high...but the 300 exc seems like my kinda of bike...I sort of miss riding a wide ratio trans...

If I had any other WR250 frames that weren't bent like overcooked spaghetti-o's like my current frame... I'd have a nicer looking dirt donk.
Wish I had play money right now too... I had to stare at a mint street legal WR450 setup for sumo duty, plus dirt and ice setups on standby, for sale, right beside my pit, all weekend... The owner kept trying to talk me into taking it out for a test rip on the track. He's evil.
I know it's not in CA anymore, but just had to bring this bad boy back up.

Friend: man riding this really hurts my balls
Me: Well you're not supposed to sit on your balls!
The only thing leery about that gen exc would be the stator. The newer version doesn't fit in the case, so if it craps out on ya, you've got to send it out for repair. I'm not 100%, but I don't believe rickystator sells a direct replacement, but they will repair/upgrade what you have.

although I typically don't like aftermarket made anything for stators...factory is best...until they poop out
@ Kurlon - don't abandon the 2-smoke Kool-Aid!!!!
you don't have a plated dirtybike in the garage???
@ jbmass - absolutely bitchin, but needs a current CA plate. after 2003, they stopped allowing people to plate bikes unless it comes with an OEM federal emissions stickers, like the ones on DR400s and other OEM m'frd dual sports

I don't have a plated anything with two wheels, and I wanna try some full size sumo racing which my WReck is NOT cut out for. Plus that WR is just plain gorgeous.
wow...no street bikes either?
that's awesome...enjoy them where they're made for it
but that's what's killing me...I want to ride more than 2-3x/month...I ride 3-4x/week to work on the street bike, but I want to ride dirt more...need more dirtbiking in my life!!!

I'm not the type who rides just to ride. I either have a destination or I'm riding with friends. I don't have any friends to street ride with currently so... no point to a street bike in the stable if it's not free. (I was making payments on the last one, hence it was voted out of the garage.) Hell, even dirt riding at the track or on the trail I have to push myself to bother if it's not part of a gathering with friends.
Racing however, I'm down for that even if I don't know anyone there. There's a purpose and end goal, so no issues getting motivated for that.
coo coo...I dig, I dig
that's sort of why I want more dirtbike in my life...I can't push on the streetbike on the road...but street plated dirtybike in the cleveland national forest every other Saturday after work, and it's a 25 min drive from whence I get off?
GO!

how are billet stators?
came across a plated YZ250 that's a bit of a rat/baja bike...will need a full tusk or baja designs kit to get the rest of the lights:
has dual HID baja designs 80W lights, lol

I'm guessing the 'billet stator' is an E-Line aftermarket setup. They're supposed to be the hot ticket but sadly are no longer on the market.
I owned a 1997 KTM300 EXC for 2 years. I never got along well with it. Trying to get to the spark plug on that thing is pretty miserable. The motor was OK, but not great. I had to install a V-Force reed cage to get more mid-hit. The forks, well, good luck with them, unless somebody has sorted them previously (there was a "slot the compression side cartridge rod" fix). Buy fork seals in a handy 6-pack. The fuel tank may rub through on the backbone of the frame. The roller style crank bearing is expensive (left side?).
I would definitely look at the YZ over that era of KTM.
