My son's bike is smoking enough it's time to open it up.
Presumably it valve seals, rings or both. I'd have to bring the head to a machine shop to have them work on it. Should I just bring the whole engine? Or take the head off and remove the piston and measure the cylinder bore myself?
I've done quite a bit of work on larger engines and it's about as simple an engine as can be, but I'm wondering if the expense of any specialized tools would offset shop labor costs.
I live in Boston, work in Peabody or Manchester NH. Where should I take it?

Does it just smoke when it starts up or all the time? It's valve seals if it only smokes on startup.
All the time.

just crack it yourself...inspect the components and do the rings and valve seals yourself (they're both cheap parts)...
when I had a smokey XR80, we just needed to re-hone the cylinder and put in new rings...still smoked a little bit before the rings seated, but it stopped smoking altogether
you don't have to take the whole engine anywhere...you can take individual parts off yourself
however you do have to take the engine out to get the cylinder head/cylinder to slide off the top
the only real special tools you might need are a valve spring compressor (although I've heard of people using a socket and a hammer) and a cylinder hone (we just used a brake cylinder hone from an autobody shop)

Just found a video on youtube. Looks pretty straightforward. Think I'll attack next weekend!

If you need a piston, just do the TBparts.com setup.

Wow that seems like a no-brainer for the money!
Just the rings alone are $35 or more.

Close your eyes, look deep in your soul, step outside yourself and let your mind go.
So, we have someone that may want to buy the bike as-is: it doesn't smoke badly at all, just at startup. We have the ORV decals on it. Should I remove them before sale, or leave them on? I assume they would not be transferable to another bike.

take them off. the new owner will be issued a new set.
Beta 200RR
Bought a really nice CRF100F today bought new in 2012. The owner gave me the Certificate of Origin, signed over to him by the dealer (Plaistow). He gave me that and a bill of sale. Will I be able to pay the sales tax and get an ORV dticker? [Nevermind, Breakdirt has a thread that answers the question]

Could always just install a new ring into the cylinder . Push it halfway down with the piston so it is straight. Then measure the end gap of the ring with a feeler gauge. Hold the cylinder up in the air with a light behind it. You don't wanna see light between the ring and cylinder wall. Somewhere on line I am sure you can find the spec. If it is not within spec they must sell a oversize ring. You could buy the oversized ring to start with and then if its too tight you could grind it down (slowly a little at a time so it don't discolor from heat) with a dremel or file till it is within spec. When you get the head off first check the valve seals and the vavle guides. It is rather easy and straightforward. But since you got a new one you could let the new owner do it.

Vaguely related question: what are popular handguards for the CRF100f? The XR has Honda brand ones.

Did the old smokey one sell?
I offered it to ArcticRubi first as he asked first. But he is traveling until next weekend and we are having a cookout next weekend so I'm about to list it FS here.

Ok, looking for something for mybrotherto learn on, unsure if this is too small or not. I won't hijack your thread though, so I'll wait to seeif it goes FS. Thanks.
This bike has a 19" front wheel and 16" rear. It's not one of the little ones. My son is 5'2 and says he can flat foot it.
Compared to a CRF100F
Compared to the very tall WR250R.
XR100R is FS, $475 OBO and for @ $400 I'll keep it so I guess it's best offer over 400. We are having a cookout next Sunday so the sooner the better.

I know someone has dibs, but as I'm doing my homework for when one comes available, do you know the seat height? I have a WR as we'll and that thing looks tiny next to it, wondering if we need something bigger (size, not cc), to learn on.
Some websites say 30.5", some say 31.5". About the same as most standards.
